The work of Jenny King Embroidery was praised
by Sarah Mower from style.com as having the
"interpretive techniques of Lesage".
Born and raised in Sussex and now settled in the vibrant city of Brighton, Jenny King is one of the most experienced and exciting embroidery and mixed-media textile designers working in the UK fashion industry today.
After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2002 with an MA in mixed-media textiles, Jenny worked in-house at a leading textile studio before moving to work for embroidery designer Karen Nicol. The list of clients included Clements Ribeiro, Chloe, John Rocha, Julian Macdonald, Betty Jackson, Matthew Williamson and Tracey Boyd.
Jenny went fully freelance in 2004 and began to consistently sell her own embroidery designs to a veritable who's who of the fashion industry including Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Armani, Donna Karan, Diane Von Furstenberg, Topshop, BCBG Max Azria, Whistles and Banana Republic. The studio quickly established itself around her and now Jenny King Embroidery counts amongst its clients an ever-growing list of high profile designers. For Erdem in particular, she has worked on every collection he has produced from and including his breakthrough Fashion Fringe-winning collection in 2005. As her reputation has grown, so has Jenny King Embroidery and Jenny now employs and manages a team of 7 embroiderers. She prides herself on the high standard of work that she and her highly specialized team regularly deliver and is committed to working with both established and emerging talent.
Jenny takes her inspiration from traditional techniques which she then translates into pieces of beautiful modern design. She is passionate about preserving the art of Irish embroidery and to this aim she is a visiting tutor at both the RCA and Bath Spa University. She also gives ad-hoc lectures and participates in exhibitions for a wide range of art, education and fashion organizations.
Jenny King is a passionate exponent of this highly specialized machine that ceased production in the 1950s. The free-hand satin stitch embroidery that can be produced on an Irish is arguably superior to more recent techniques both in terms of creativity and quality. Jenny is proud to preserve a technique that could otherwise, sadly, become a dying art.
